Get more use out of your TrueNAS Scale hardware by making use of virtualization, and make TrueNAS do MORE!
Set up your storage and create 2 Datasets, one to store your ISO images and the other to store the Virtual Machines.
When creating the Datasets I suggest leaving compression off to save performance when installing the virtual machines and when running them, and for the virtual machines dataset also set sync to always.
Next select the “Virtualization” Side bar and then “Add Virtual Machines” in the Virtual Machines pane.
Make the selections in the pop out pane to customize your virtual machine, setting your CPU cores and threads, Memory, Storage size of the VM and the NIC Adapter type .
For the “Zvol Location“, select the “Virtual Machines” dataset we created previously.
Under the Installation Media, If you already have uploaded an ISO image to your ISO’s Dataset, go ahead and select the image, If not, select the check box to “Upload an installer image file“, then select a location (the ISO’s Dataset created previously) to store the ISO you are going to use and upload.
TrueNAS should automatically select the ISO that is uploaded.
For GPU leave it blank to have TrueNAS auto select the GPU in the machine if there is one.
Review the summary and select “Save“
Once save, you will be returned to the Virtual Machine window.
Here you will see the Virtual Machine you have just created, Select it to expand the options for the amchine, and select start if you have not already started the machine from autostart.
Once started you should have the Display option, selecting this will bring up the console for the machine in a new browser tab.
Congrats! you have a Virtual Machine!
